This three-day seminar provides basic knowledge of iron casting and moulding material testing in both theoretical and practical form.

Theoretical Part

  • General overview of foundry operations
  • Casting processes
  • Iron casting materials
  • Moulding materials
  • Fundamentals of metallurgy
  • Foundry and casting process technology
  • Basics of simulation (component and process design)
  • Fundamentals of metallography and casting defects

Practical Part

  • Casting of components made of GJS or GJL
  • Execution of metallurgical treatments
  • Quality assessment of cast components
  • Casting defect analysis
  • Moulding material testing

Completion

Certificate, short final examination, mandatory attendance

 

Number of Participants

Due to the practical exercises, the maximum number of participants is limited to 12.

Iron Foundry Technology II

This three-day seminar builds on the fundamental knowledge of iron casting processes taught in the ÖGI course Iron Foundry Technology I and provides theoretical and practical insights into advanced technologies, methods, materials, and moulding materials used in foundry operations.

Theoretical Part

  • Review of fundamentals from Iron Foundry Technology I
  • Production processes and material properties:
  • Inoculation, magnesium treatment, thermal analysis
  • Process and solidification simulation
  • Metallography
  • Material and Component Testing
    • MT I: tensile testing, hardness testing, dynamic testing

    • MT II: wedge test, Charpy impact test, chemical composition, physical properties

  • Non-destructive testing methods: radiographic testing (RT), radioscopy (RS), and computed tomography (CT)

Practical Part

  • Casting of components
  • Thermal analysis
  • Metallographic investigations
  • Mechanical strength testing
  • Computed tomography
  • Failure and damage analysis
