3D Sand Printing

This technology enables the fast and cost-effective production of moulds and cores directly on the basis of CAD data sets. Sand moulds and sand cores with complex geometries and undercuts are produced using a generative structure in the so-called binder jetting process. A layer of sand approx. 0.3 mm thick is cyclically applied to the print bed via a special distribution unit (recoater). Then the print head selectively applies binder to the sand bed in order to bind sand particles together at the desired positions. The application of the sand layer and binder layer is repeated until the part is finished. The resulting part is supported by the loose sand in the job box, eliminating the need for additional support structures that would need to be removed afterwards. The binder jetting process has a very high build rate compared to other additive manufacturing processes. The printed sand moulds or sand cores can be used directly for casting with molten metal and enable the implementation of novel concepts such as media-carrying channels or functional structural units.
